Michigan First's Community Giving Initiative Spreads Kindness This Summer

Back to Blog

Michigan First Credit Union’s community-focused team is dedicated to spreading kindness, making a positive impact, and surprising people in and around the communities we serve – and this summer we did just that!

Michigan First launched its community giving initiative in 2019, and today focuses on enhancing local communities by showing up and giving back to people in the community. Since its launch, the Community Crew has surprised and delighted more than 5,000 people.

In July, the Brownstown Kroger team surprised attendees at the Artisan Market and Food Truck Rally in Flat Rock with free ice cream sundaes and slushies from Motor City Sweet Treats; they purchased lemonade from Halukos Favorites and cookies from Serendipity Cakery to pass out to attendees and vendors. The team also prepaid for smash burgers from Gojo’s Grub House food truck and purchased meals for people in the Bad Mother Truckers food truck line.

Earlier in August, the Community Crew and team members from our Ypsilanti branch helped local families beat the heat at the Rolling Hills Waterpark by purchasing admissions tickets for them.

In Grand Rapids, our team members surprised shoppers at various stores with gift cards to help pay for their back-to-school purchases. Our team also ventured over to Kent Hills Elementary School, met with teachers, and provided them with gift baskets of school materials to help them prepare for the upcoming school year.

To continue the giving spirit, the Community Crew visited one of our favorite local businesses, Good Cakes & Bakes, a Detroit-based bakery, where we bought out the storefront for the day.

At the end of the month, the Community Crew visited Wayne State University on the second day of the fall semester. We bought coffee and treats for students in line for Starbucks and passed out bookstore gift cards to students while walking around campus, wishing them luck on their college careers.

Michigan First’s Community Crew has been hard at work giving back to the communities we serve. The team will continue our efforts to spread good in the community, so be on the lookout for a Michigan First Community Crew member near you. We challenge you to pay it forward and spread some good in your community, too!
